Source:  chinahighlights.com

The year of the monkey begins February 8, 2016.

If you were born in 1920, 1932, 1944, 1956, 1968, 1980, 1992, 2004 or 2016 (based on the Chinese lunar calendar), this is your 'Ben Ming Nian' - your zodiac year!

Chinese tradition encourages those entering their Ben Ming Nian to wear red for good luck.  Red is one of the luckiest colours in Chinese culture, standing for prosperity, loyalty, success and happiness.

There are 60 gods associated with the lunar calendar cycle.  They take turns presiding over the current year to bless and protect people.  If the god presiding over the current year was presiding in the zodiac year you were born, there will be changes in your luck.  In addition to monkeys, tigers, pigs and snakes will also be affected by the presiding god this year.

Here are some other items considered to be lucky in the Year of the Monkey:

Numbers:  4 and 9

Colours:  White, Blue and Gold

Flowers:  Chrysanthemum and Crape-Myrtle

Direction:  North, North West, West

Months:  Chinese lunar months 8 and 12
