CONDOMINIUM ACT REVIEW - First Recommendation Released
Ontario's Ministry of Consumer Services has today announced that the province is moving forward with its first recommendation surrounding the review of the Condominium Act, 1998 and is working to introduce a requirement of mandatory qualifications to be met by condominium managers.
In today's release, the Ministry has stated as follows:
"In recent years, Ontario’s condominium market has become more complex, making condominium management increasingly important. While many managers are responsible for buildings worth tens or hundreds of millions of dollars with matching operating budgets, managers are not currently required to have training or an understanding of the Condominium Act, by-laws and rules, finances, building maintenance or the contracting out of services like cleaning, landscaping and repairs.
Strengthening protections for the province’s 1.3 million condominium residents is part of the Ontario government’s plan to protect consumers while building a fair, safe and informed marketplace."
A full report of recommendations and options from Stage Two of the legislative review process is expected to be released later this summer. Further information is available at the Ministry's website.
