Conference Preview: 3 Days to Go!

Session 1D: “Working with Handymen and Contractors”

With the recent amendments to the Workplace Safety and Insurance Act, Working with Handymen and Contractorsis especially timely and useful. Prior to the amendments, workers’ compensation coverage was only mandatory for employees, leaving independent operators, often referred to as independent contractors, exempt.   The amendments, which came into force on January 1, 2013, now make workers’ compensation coverage mandatory for independent operators as well.

The amendments also impose statutory obligations on condominium corporations, as same are now required to obtain copies of Workplace Safety and Insurance Board Clearance Certificates from independent operators prior to the commencement of any work and, should a condominium corporation fail to do so, it could be fined up to $100,000. Therefore, Working with Handymen and Contractorspromises to be a very informative session as it will outline the new statutory obligations that apply to condominium corporations as well as procedures that can be implemented by same to ensure compliance.
